Quicktime Pro Tutorial

1. Organize your Drift 2 folder as illustrated. All of your raw clips (directly from your camera) should be in the "raw_clips" sub-folder. All of your working clips that you will be using to build your rough-cut sketches and final silent videos should be filed in the "working_clips" sub-folder. In this way, you preserve a copy of all of your raw material for future use.

2. Open Quicktime Pro, and close the pop-up window that appears.

3. Set your preferences . . .

. . . make sure that "Open movies in new players" is checked, and that "Show Content Guide automatically" is unchecked.

4. Go into "File" and then "Open File" . . .

. . . select the raw clip you wish to edit. Click "Open."

5. This raw clip will open into a Quicktime transport window with the Playhead ("upside-down triangle") at the beginning of the clip. Press play to view.

6. The clip will begin to play as the playhead makes its way across the timeline. Note that the time (in minutes and seconds) of the clip appears at the far left. Note also the Play button has changed to Pause . . . click when you wish to stop the progress.

7. The clip will play until the end, and the playhead will stop, and the total time elapsed will appear.

8. Now we can edit this clip. Here we will cut a bit off the end. You can either type "O" to set an Out point, or click on the right-side Selection Marker and drag it over to where you want to end your edit, and release.

9. We also wish to cut a bit from the beginning, so type "I" to insert an In Point, or grab the left-hand selection marker and drag it to where you want this edited clip to begin.

10. Go to "Edit," then to "Trim to Selection" . . .

. . . the excess footage is removed and the selection markers return to the left side of the timeline.

11. Now you will need to save this edited clip as a new file. Go to "File," then "Save As."

12. Select "Save as a self-contained movie," select your "working_clips" sub-folder, and name your new edited clip in a way that you'll be able to track it later as you begin assembling your rough-cut clips.

13. To combine two clips together, open both clips and arrange them side by side. In this case, we are going to insert the entire second clip into the first clip. Select the second clip.

14. Go to "Edit," and then "Select All" . . .

. . . the timeline of the second clip will now be darkened, indicating the entire clip has been selected . . .

. . . go to "Edit," then "Copy."

15. Go through the first clip and place the playhead at the point you wish to insert the second clip (it could be at the start or end of the clip, or it could be in the middle somewhere).

16. Go to "Edit," and then "Paste" . . .

. . . the timeline will reflect the addition of the second clip, increasing the total elapsed time to include both clips.

17. Remember to Save As, in this case naming the file something different to indicate a combined clip (this is important if you want to keep your working clips intact in their original state for use in future projects).

18. Now let's prepare our rough-cut sketch for export to web. Go to "Edit," then "Export . . ."

. . . rename your file to indicate that this is your first rough-cut sketch, then click on "Options."

19. Make sure that "Prepare for Internet Streaming" is selected, and "Fast Start" is the preference. Click on "Settings" under "Video" (note that with your silent videos for Drift 2, Sound is not an option, but for Drift 3, the settings shown in grey are correct).

20. Make sure that all of the options are selected/changed as illustrated. Click OK . . .

. . . and now you are ready to upload your rough-cut sketch as you did your MP3s for Drift 1.

21. Check the Dimensions of the clip. If it's not 320 x 240, click on "Size" . . .

. . . to select 320 x 240 in the Dimensions pulldown. Click "OK."

22. Back in the Movie Settings window, click "OK" . .

. . . and then wait patiently for the Exporting process to complete . . .

. . . once that is done, you are ready to upload your rough-cut sketch as you did your MP3s for Drift 1.
